Flanked by shapely urns, a new curved stairway with embedded
lights creates dramatic impact when viewed from the street. An
old-world statue of perfect proportion yields a delightful view
from both outside and inside the house.
We integrate the new landscape with the house by using brick
in the walkway landings. We keep the Japanese maple since it
accents both the arched entry way and the new statue.
Mostly evergreen plantings look good all year. The flicks of white in the leaves of the variegated dwarf mock orange echo the variegated look of the bricks which also have white in them. Color can be tricky against brick houses; purple and white are often used to harmonize plantings. In this case we use both purple and white verbena which bloom in summer. We plant candytuft (not shown), a small evergreen plant, to provide white blooms in the wintertime. Azaleas bloom in the spring here, and we get fall color from the deciduous trees. It is important in landscape planting design to introduce interest in all four seasons.
